Improving and evaluating processes
Automotive SPICE® is a standard used as a framework for improving and evaluating processes. It applies to the development of mechatronic systems, focusing on the software and system parts of the product. However, starting from version 3.1 of the standard, more engineering disciplines (e.g. hardware engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.) and related field-specific processes can be added to Automotive SPICE® depending on the product to be developed.
The Automotive SPICE® app is a prerequisite for becoming and remaining a supplier to most European automakers. Due to the ever-evolving international interweaving of supplier relationships, the standard’s application has been extended to Asia and the USA. The concept of process capability determination using the Automotive SPICE® assessment model is based on a two-dimensional framework. The framework consists of a process dimension and a capability dimension.
Process evaluation is a disciplined evaluation of an organizational unit’s processes versus a process evaluation model. The A-SPICE process evaluation model (PAM) is designed for use in making appropriate assessments of process capability in the development of embedded automotive systems. It has been developed in accordance with ISO/IEC 33004 requirements.
Process evaluation model
A-SPICE has its own process reference model (PRM) developed based on the process reference model 4.5. It has been further developed and adapted with the specific needs of the automotive industry in mind. If processes outside the scope of automotive SPICE are needed, appropriate processes from other process reference models such as ISO/IEC 12207 or ISO/IEC 15288 can be added according to the organization’s business needs. The PRM is included in this document and is used in conjunction with the Automotive SPICE process evaluation model when performing an evaluation.
The A-SPICE process evaluation model includes a set of indicators that must be considered when interpreting the purpose of the A-SPICE process reference model. These indicators can also be used when implementing a process improvement program following an evaluation.
