In recent years, important steps have been taken in the maritime sector to take serious measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to reduce fuel consumption.

Efficiency and low operating costs 

Along with the developing technology, it has developed considerably in terms of efficiency and low operating costs in propulsion systems on ships, and it has brought many advantages. Propulsion systems are one of the most important sub-elements of ships. Today, propulsion systems in which internal combustion thermal machines such as diesel engines and gas turbines are used as the main propulsion are widely used. In recent years, with the studies on environmental pollution, the use of electrical propulsion systems has been increasing and offers advantages that can replace mechanical systems.

Minimum heat losses

The main equipment and heat losses of the electric drive system are given in figure. There is a minimum 7.7% and maximum 9.7% heat loss between input power and shaft power.

Low, medium and high speeds

Electric propulsion systems can meet the energy needed by the ship during low, medium and high speeds by connecting more than one generator of different power to the energy distribution system without the need for mechanical clutch systems. Thus, each of the generators in the system and the propulsion systems they are connected to operate at a power close to the rated power, preventing high-powered generators from operating at low capacity and low-powered generators from operating under overload. This increases the efficiency of both the generators and the system.

–    Generators of different power can be connected directly to the main drive motor, working individually or in combination, directly or with a simple clutch.

–    Due to the capability of the electric motor, maximum maneuverability is achieved at low propulsion speeds

–    Electric motor, driver etc. Efficiency of electrical equipment is very high

Disadvantages of electric drive systems compared to conventional systems;

–    Higher initial investment cost

–    Lack of experienced ship personnel

–    Transmission losses between equipment
