Cost benefits

The diversity of ships’ propulsion systems makes it impossible to present a single cost-benefit analysis. Each ship has specific consequences. For this reason, CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) and OPEX (Operating Expenses) estimations are given according to the scenarios and working intervals to be used.

CAPEX parameters

The average prices of the diesel machine, generator set, electric motor and drives, which are the main equipment of the propulsion system, are the prices received from the manufacturers or suppliers. Electric motors and drive should be repriced at drive-specific speeds and sizes. Investment costs for battery packs decrease as technology advances. An average of $160/kWh for AGM type batteries, and an average of $670/kWh for lithium-ion battery packs.

OPEX parameters

The following average costs were obtained with the information obtained from various engine suppliers. 571 €/m3 (2017) was taken as the basic reference fuel price and other costs were calculated as average as indicated in Table 02. Electric motor and driver overhauls are extremely rare and are not included in the table.
